Mesmerizing Mandalas

Our last project was creating colorful and inspirational mandala designs.  Students began by sketching concentric circles and filling the rings with watercolor.  Then, they used fine-tip markers and colored pencils to create intricate patterns and designs in each ring, as well as a quote or words of inspiration.

The name,

mandala, is from the Sanskit word for circle, a symbol of wholeness and centering.

During the creation of this project, students were introduced to the sand mandalas created by Tibetan monks [video].  Additional inspiration and instruction for this mandala project came from The Art Classroom website [link below].
